Mission Statement

To promote and advance the field of Imaging Informatics by:

• Increasing awareness of AMIA members and the broader Biomedical Informatics community of the essential role of Imaging and Imaging Informatics in basic research, clinical product development and evaluation, public health, and health care

• Exploring the applicability and opportunity of innovative Biomedical Informatics methods for Imaging

• Promoting and fostering interaction, discussion and collaboration among individuals, groups, industry, government, and professional organizations, exploring both the national and international opportunities for Imaging Informatics

• Providing a collegial forum for discussion and professional development of Imaging Informatics professionals through the education and interaction of its members

Scope

The MIS-WG primary purpose is to promote and advance the field of Imaging Informatics. Imaging Informatics has traditionally been associated with image information systems such as Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS). However, Imaging Informatics encompasses many other aspects of medical imaging. It is a broad field that explores the intersection of Imaging Science, Biomedical Engineering and Biomedical Informatics, including topics such as imaging ontologies, theoretical methodologies and techniques of image processing, standards for image information sharing, content-based image retrieval, decision support in image detection and interpretation, integration of imaging and non-imaging data (such as genomic and drug information), computer-aided systems, and qualitative and quantitative evaluations of image-based systems. The MIS-WG offers AMIA members an opportunity to share and to expand their expertise in Imaging Informatics, as well as to foster collaboration with other Imaging, Biomedical, and Health Informatics groups nationally and internationally. Recognizing the importance of diverse health system and policy issues, the MIS-WG also fosters member education, research, and collaboration across the healthcare spectrum.
