Developing a National Framework on the Acquisition and Use of Health Data

Last April 2006, AMIA assembled a blue ribbon panel of 30 experts industry, government, academia, and foundations to from members along with stakeholders from government, industry and healthcare to explore the complex ethical, political, technical, and social issues surround the secondary use of health data. To follow up on the recommendations of the blue ribbon panel, AMIA developed a DRAFT a comprehensive taxonomy of use and users of secondary health data. The goal is to create a taxonomy that is useful, accurate, and comprehensive (but not exhaustive) for developing policy related to the re-use of health data for a purpose other than that for which the data were originally collected.

Join us at the Town Hall meeting during the AMIA Spring Congress to review and discuss AMIA’s proposed DRAFT Taxonomy. Provide input and comment to help us prepare the next version as we help formulate a public policy framework regarding secondary use of health data to ensure public trust as the national health information network evolves. Secondary use of health data can enhance health care experiences for individuals, expand knowledge about disease and appropriate treatments, strengthen understanding about the effectiveness and efficiency of our health care systems, support public health and security goals, and aid businesses in meeting the needs of their customers. Yet, access to and secondary use of data poses complex ethical, political, technical, and social challenges. Please send any comments or suggestions to: Meryl Bloomrosen at meryl@amia.org.
